Engaging seminar designed to foster communication among the upcoming age brackets
In the heart of Pforzheim, a city known for its forward-thinking approach to urban development, the Wirtschaft and Stadtmarketing Pforzheim (WSP) hosted a participation workshop. The event aimed to engage "Generation Y" and "Generation Z" in addressing urban issues, tapping into their creative energy and fresh perspectives.
The workshop, held at the Cassetta restaurant, brought together around 40 young people aged 20 to 32. These participants were selected based on demographic characteristics and interests, reflecting the diverse voices of the younger generations.
The purpose of the workshop was to inspire future urban development projects. The participants were divided into groups to develop ideas and solutions for urban relevant topics. The discussions revolved around digitization and integration, reflecting the digital-native mindset of the younger generations.
Michael Hertl, head of the inner-city development department at the WSP, expressed appreciation for the creativity and commitment of the young participants. He believes that their perspectives and ideas will significantly contribute to shaping a livable Pforzheim city center.
The workshop's outcomes are expected to serve as inspiration for future urban development projects. This initiative is part of a broader focus by the WSP on different young population groups, as demonstrated by the PF-Next project, which also focuses on Generation Y and Z.
Recent urban development projects in Pforzheim that involve participation from Generation Y and Z include the Hellerhöfe district and the CARL timber-hybrid high-rise project. The Hellerhöfe district features an eight-storey reinforced concrete residential building with a daycare center on the ground floor, a 16-storey residential tower built using a hybrid timber system, and two additional eight-storey buildings. The design includes amenities such as daycare facilities, retail units, and a shared two-storey underground car park.
The CARL project in Pforzheim is noted as the tallest timber-hybrid high-rise in southern Germany, blending sustainability, affordability, and bold design. These characteristics align closely with values and preferences commonly held by Generation Y and Z, who prioritize sustainable living environments and innovative urban housing solutions.
While the information does not explicitly mention active, formal participation of Generation Y and Z in planning or development roles in these projects, the nature of these projects—focusing on affordability, sustainability, and community amenities—strongly suggests they are aimed at and may involve younger generations either as residents, users, or participants in associated urban development discussions or programs.
The workshop's outcomes will be incorporated into further planning processes for urban development projects, ensuring that the voices of the younger generations continue to shape the future of Pforzheim. The event also included an Instagram live stream, allowing a wider audience to contribute comments and suggestions.
In an era where urban planning and local politics are often criticised for being out of touch with the needs and desires of the younger generations, initiatives like this one in Pforzheim are a step in the right direction. By involving Generation Y and Z in the planning process, cities can ensure that their urban spaces are not only livable but also relevant and engaging for the generations that will shape their future.

- In the discussions, the participants proposed ideas for integrating home-and-garden concepts into urban relevant topics to create more livable spaces for the younger generations.
- As the participants of the workshop show a strong interest in home and lifestyle projects, it is likely that future urban development projects in Pforzheim will cater to the preferences of Generation Y and Z in terms of adaptable living spaces and sustainable designs.
