Embracing the outdoors, eschewing urban life!
In the city of Osnabrück, an exciting initiative has been launched to promote environmentally friendly measures and improve urban air, biodiversity, and storm protection. The city is participating in the "GroundAir" competition by Provinzial Insurance.
Unsealing areas in the city is an important step towards sustainable urban development. This practice offers numerous benefits, including the use of collected stones in construction measures for flood protection. Team leader Andreas Hoffmann stated that these stones are processed and used in such measures to strengthen the city's defences against flooding.
The "GroundAir" competition aims to transform sealed areas into green living spaces, improving the environment and quality of life. Citizens can contribute by opening sealed areas, converting gravel gardens to green areas, or uploading before-and-after photos to bodenluft.net.
Unsealed areas also allow for better water management, reducing flooding and promoting groundwater recharge. This is a crucial aspect of the competition's goal to reduce soil pollution, protect the urban climate, increase biodiversity, and strengthen flood protection.
The Lippe Waste Management Association provides information on the drop-off points for the stones on their website. The city portal's team of urban planning can assist with the pick-up and disposal of stones or gravel from unsealed areas. Prior arrangement is essential for this service due to the city not having larger storage areas for this purpose.
The collected stones from unsealed areas in Detmold can be disposed of as clean construction waste via the Recycling Center Hellsiek on the Hellsiek landfill or the Recycling Center Maibolte at the Lemgo composting facility. Information on the drop-off points for the stones, including opening hours, directions, and the waste fractions that can be deposited there, is available on the website of the Lippe Waste Management Association at abfall-lippe.de/abgabestellen.
Winning the competition could result in cash prizes and vouchers for a garden center of choice. The competition promotes biodiversity by providing more habitat for plants, birds, and other animals, increasing the diversity of species in the city.
Improvement of the urban air is another significant benefit. More green areas can lower city temperatures and provide a more pleasant air quality, especially on hot days. A more beautiful and livable environment is the result, as more green areas and open spaces improve the appearance of the city, invite relaxation, and promote the well-being of citizens.
By participating in the "GroundAir" competition, Osnabrück is demonstrating its commitment to creating a greener, more sustainable, and more livable city for its residents. Citizens are encouraged to join this initiative and contribute to the transformation of the city's sealed areas into vibrant, green living spaces.
