Laura Enriquez Chávez and Asunción Enriquez Chávez, known as 'Taller Los Tepalcates', are making their artistic debut during Zona Maco, an annual international art fair held in Mexico City. Their work is being showcased by AGO Projects, a gallery based in New York and Mexico City, in a show called 'Earthling; Life through Earth'.

The exhibition, which opens on 3 February, 2025, at AGO Projects in Mexico City, features the sisters' distinctive ceramic pieces. They create surreal, fantastical creatures, such as crocodiles, roosters, dolphins, and coyotes, with open mouths reaching towards the sky. This unique style has been developed over decades in their hometown of Santa María Atzompa, Oaxaca, where the tradition of ceramics dates back to the pre-Columbian era of Monte Albán.

The sisters handle all the hand building, firing, and glazing of their works. A notable production technique they employ is covering their creations with tepalcates (broken fragments of clay) before and during the firing process. This method gives their work a distinctive, textured appearance.

Elise Durbecq, a Mexico-based designer with over 15 years' experience championing artisan collaborations, collaborated with the Enriquez Chávez sisters on the overall concept for their exhibition at AGO Projects. AGO Projects and Durbecq have arranged the works by families and typologies on blue, stepped plinths within the gallery.

Nanashy Mauro's paintings are being showcased alongside the ceramics of the Enriquez Chávez sisters, marking his first foray into the gallery context. Mauro's paintings explore the absurdity of modern habitats and complement the ceramics, creating another form of dialogue.

Zona Maco, Latin America's largest art fair, is taking place from 5 - 9 February 2025 at the Centro Citibanamex in Mexico City. For more information about Zona Maco, visit zsonamaco.com.
