Düsseldorf Fair Parking Area Transforms into Host for Significant Gatherings - Dusseldorf's exhibition grounds to host major events in the future.
Düsseldorf to Host Large-Scale Open-Air Events
The city of Düsseldorf has approved plans to transform a parking lot near the fairgrounds into a venue for large-scale open-air events, capable of accommodating up to 80,000 visitors. These annual events, numbering up to six, will expand the city's offering of event locations.
The decision is not without consideration for environmental and noise concerns, as highlighted by the city council. Tree felling will only occur when necessary, subject to stringent regulations, and compensatory planting will be carried out. Previously, such measures drew criticism from environmentalists and local residents.
Initial plans had the city hosting a concert by rock band AC/DC on July 8, but the event has since been moved to the Merkur Spiel-Arena due to undisclosed reasons. A 2018 concert by musician Ed Sheeran, which had sold 85,000 tickets, faced opposition due to the planned felling of 104 trees, leading to a failed attempt to proceed with the event. Sheeran ultimately performed in Gelsenkirchen.
For the 2025 Ed Sheeran Mathematics Tour, Düsseldorf appears to be proceeding as planned, scheduled as the final stop for the European leg on September 7. As of now, there is no evidence of environmental concerns or political objections hindering the current tour concert in Düsseldorf's fairground parking lot or any other open-air venue for Sheeran's show.

The city council of Düsseldorf, in their community policy, is ensuring stringent regulations regarding tree felling for the large-scale open-air events, considering the impact on lifestyle and local residents, in a bid to create a harmonious environment that supports outdoor-living and home-and-garden. In light of this, vocational training in environmental conservation and urban planning may become crucial for the successful execution of these events.
