Duisburg's 'Reborad' Bike Workshop: A Hub of Recovery and Community
The 'Reborad' bike workshop, run by the non-profit association Rainbow Bicycle since 1983, is more than just a place to fix bicycles. It's a hub of social participation and recovery for those in need, including Achim Wolfrum, a former IT specialist who now finds purpose and stability there.
Wolfrum, who suffers from schizophrenia, has been working at the workshop for about 20 years, three times a week. He feels valued and part of a community, contributing to his recovery. The workshop, located in Duisburg, sells new bicycles and repaired ones, with books available for purchase at just one euro or online. It also houses a small bookstore where clients learn and practice work steps like order confirmation, acceptance, and shipping.
Among the 31 clients, many severely mentally ill, is Sascha Langer, a 37-year-old apprentice. He's excelling at vocational school, aiming to attend the master school in Münster after his apprenticeship. The workshop not only repairs bicycles for customers but also enables clients to participate in societal life by fixing bikes for their own use.
The 'Reborad' bike workshop, through its unique blend of bicycle repair, bookstore, and social support, empowers individuals like Achim Wolfrum and Sascha Langer. It provides a sense of purpose, daily structure, and a path to recovery, all while contributing to the local community.
