In an interview with the NAN news agency, Chief Route Commander Victor Okelola, the Costain Unit Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Lagos State, shared insights on road safety and the role of women as co-drivers.
Okelola emphasised the importance of adhering to traffic rules and regulations, stating that driving above 100km per hour is dangerous. He also highlighted common traffic offenses such as overloading, excessive speeding, and driving without a license.
The commander urged women travelling with their husbands to act as safe co-drivers instead of performing other tasks. By being observant and cautious, they can minimise road accidents. Okelola noted that women tend to focus on their phones instead of their surroundings, which could potentially lead to distractions.
In addition to this, Okelola appealed to motorists to ensure their vehicles are in good condition before a trip. He also highlighted the importance of paying attention to their husbands' driving attitudes, as activities like applying makeup or tying headgears in the car can be distracting.
The FRSC commander's advice comes amidst recent publications on various topics, including Agriculture, Health, Education, and Features. Furthermore, a UK thought leader has urged Nigerian chief executives to embrace better governance.
Okelola concluded by urging all motorists to abide by road traffic rules and regulations to ensure road safety. The interview serves as a reminder of the collective responsibility we all have in ensuring safer roads for everyone.
