Transforming a Neglected Garden into an Amazing Bee-Friendly Space

After living in their house for an unspecified amount of time, a family has decided to breathe new life into their neglected garden. The grass was yellow when they first moved in, but that's all about to change.

The garden project has already started, with the family enlisting the help of a gardening company to turn their garden into their own. They have replaced the back fence, filled out the borders, gotten rid of a rotten structure on the wall, created a bee-friendly bed, and a herb garden. The family already has rhubarb and raspberries in the ground, and they plan to grow salads and other vegetables in the garden.

The gardening company has drawn a plan for the garden based on the family's desires and the potential of the garden. The garden project includes veg plots and a greenhouse. The family is excited to transform their garden from "sorta okay" to amazing.

The first step in the process is assessing and clearing the site carefully to preserve valuable existing plants. The family has cut out the border on the left-hand side of the garden, and they have been removing invasive weeds like brambles by hand to avoid harm. They have identified plants to keep, such as the rhubarb and raspberries already in the ground.

Next, the family will improve the soil health by breaking up compacted soil with a rotary cultivator or by hand and adding organic matter such as compost or well-rotted manure (avoiding fresh manure to prevent plant burn).

The family will then design their garden layout to include dedicated vegetable beds and flower borders rich with bee-attracting plants. They plan to plant pollinator-friendly flowers such as lavender, borage, foxglove, and herbs alongside vegetables. They will also install mulch around plants to conserve moisture, reduce weeds, and provide shelter for pollinators.

Watering will be crucial in the early stages of the garden's growth. The family will water their new plantings regularly, starting daily while seeds or seedlings establish, then lessening frequency to deep weekly watering.

Incorporating flowering borders near vegetable plots will support pollinators and encourage biodiversity. The family will also create welcoming spaces for seating and decorative features.

This phased, careful approach allows the family to gradually rebuild soil vitality, plant health, and biodiversity, creating a productive and vibrant garden that supports bees and yields fresh vegetables. Patience and attentive maintenance are key to long-term success in restoring neglected gardens.

The family will update on the progress of the garden project, and we look forward to seeing the transformation of their garden into a flourishing, bee-friendly vegetable and flower haven.

The family's garden transformation project comprises a combination of home-and-garden activities, such as the installation of a bee-friendly bed and a herb garden, as part of their desire for an improved outdoor-living space. With the help of a gardening company, they intend to upgrade their garden lifestyle by creating dedicated vegetable beds, flower borders, and incorporating a greenhouse in the plan.
