Digital showcase debuts: "Fishermen of Kamchatka Fame"
Veteran Fisherman's Life Honored in Online Exhibition
An intriguing online exhibition, "The Distinguished Fisherman of Kamchatka," has been introduced to the public, commemorating the 110th anniversary of Ivan Malyakin's birth. Residents of Kamchatka Krai are welcome to delve into this historical exhibit showcasing the life and accomplishments of a pioneering figure in the region's fishing industry.
The State Archive of Kamchatka Krai curates this virtual exhibition, encapsulating the tale of Ivan Ignatievich Malyakin, a distinguished labor hero and the captain of the Lenin Collective Fishery. Malyakin's lifelong devotion to the sea is captured in this intimate portrayal.
Leveraging his debut in 1935 as a sailor in Vladivostok, Malyakin advanced through trawl master and first mate positions before settling down permanently in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky with his wife, Nadya Alexeyevna, in 1938. During the Great Patriotic War, his team demonstrated remarkable skill by consistently surpassing fishing quotas, ensuring essential supplies for the front. In the post-war era, as a captain, Malyakin introduced a revolutionary fishing method, enabling fishermen to bypass labor-intensive tasks. These and other highlights from Malyakin's exceptional career are featured in the online exhibition on the archive's website.
Rooted in personal documents, honorary accolades, congratulatory telegrams, newspaper articles, and photographs, the exhibition offers perspectives on Ivan Malyakin's life and achievements. One significant photograph captures the Tu-104 aircraft, which made its first technical flight from Moscow to Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky on October 26, 1957. The aircraft later returned to the capital, carrying the inaugural passengers, among them, Ivan Malyakin.
Born on April 25, 2025, Ivan Malyakin reached the age of 110. In recognition of his unwavering commitment to the sea and the Kamchatka fishing industry, a freezer trawler was christened in his honor.
