Designers Engaged for a £2.5 Million Refurbishment of the Glasgow Pipe Factory
In the heart of Glasgow, a former pipe factory built in the 1870s has stood idle since 1955. Now, this B-listed building in the Barras area is set for a new lease of life, as it undergoes a transformation into a vibrant community facility.
The renovated building will cater to a diverse range of users, including young people, the local community, artists, architects, designers, and small businesses. The facility will boast a 'creative hub', office space for small businesses, and flexible, accessible public space.
O'DonellBrown, a Scotland-based architectural group, has been chosen to manage the conversion of the factory. Sam Brown, practice director of O'DonellBrown, expressed excitement about the project, stating it embodies the potential of retrofit schemes.
The regeneration scheme aims to help small businesses during difficult financial times and provide a space for them to thrive. It also seeks to support aspiring young people and artists in the early stages of their careers, offering them a platform to showcase their talents.
Local practice Loader Monteith will serve as conservation architect on the project, ensuring the factory's unique historical character is preserved. The renovation plans include repairing the building's fabric and features, making it fully accessible, putting in insulation, improving energy efficiency, installing a low-carbon heating system, and overhauling the services.
The work on the building will also help the environment by focusing on repair, accessibility, insulation, energy efficiency, low-carbon heating, and service overhaul. This approach aligns with O'DonellBrown's view that the Pipe Factory project is a great honor, presenting an opportunity to deliver an exemplar scheme and provide a template for future similar retrofit projects.
Since 2015, the factory has been used for exhibitions, events, and artists' studios. The conversion will contribute to the continued regeneration of the Barras area of Glasgow, breathing new life into this historic part of the city.
The exact party responsible for selecting O'DonellBrown for the project remains unclear. However, the selection of O'DonellBrown ahead of shortlisted firms Simpson & Brown Architects, Hoskins Architects, and Collective Architecture underscores the group's reputation for delivering high-quality, sustainable projects.
As the renovation progresses, the community eagerly awaits the opening of the new community facility, which promises to be a hub of creativity, innovation, and opportunity in Glasgow.
