Counterfeit Labubu dolls pose a life-threatening danger to young children, authorities have cautioned.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has issued a stern warning about the dangers of fake Labubu dolls. Acting Chairman Peter A. Feldman stated that these counterfeit toys are illegal, dangerous, and have no place in American homes.
To avoid these potentially hazardous fakes, consumers are advised to be vigilant and aware of the signs distinguishing counterfeit "Lafufu" dolls from genuine Labubu toys.
Firstly, authentic Labubu dolls always have nine teeth on their face. Fake versions often have a different number or irregular teeth shapes. Additionally, the real Labubu's face has a specific, consistent colour. Fakes might display overly bright or off colours and distorted facial features.
Genuine Labubu dolls also feature an authenticity stamp or engraved Pop Mart tag on the bottom or side of the foot that includes the artist's name. This mark is absent on counterfeit dolls.
Official Labubus come with a holographic Pop Mart sticker and a scannable QR code on the box and tag, linking to the official Pop Mart website for validation. Fakes lack these or have poor imitations.
Authentic toys come in boxes with proper UKCA/CE marks (if sold in the UK), clear manufacturer/importer information, and safety warnings. Counterfeits often lack this. Genuine dolls show crisp printing, seamless stitching, and consistent colours on the doll and packaging. Fakes usually cut corners on quality.
Always purchase from official Pop Mart stores or trusted retailers to avoid fakes. Be aware of deep discounts, as they may indicate a counterfeit product.
The CPSC has identified multiple shipments of the lookalikes attempting to enter the U.S. from China. Reports suggest that fake Labubu dolls are small enough for children to put in their mouth and block their airway. Some of these dolls have been reported to break apart easily, releasing small pieces that can become choking hazards.
In light of these concerns, the CPSC advises consumers not to buy the faux toys and to stop using them immediately. Consumers can report incidents involving injury or product defect to the CPSC.
To ensure the safety of your children and your home, check safety labeling on Labubu dolls for choking hazard warnings and independent safety certification marks. Sign up for breaking news alerts from the news agency to stay informed about product recalls and safety updates.
Remember, your child's safety is paramount. By being aware of these signs and purchasing from trusted sources, you can help keep harmful counterfeit toys out of your home.
