Continuous operation of water tanks in the city green spaces of Offenbach
In the face of prolonged heatwaves and scarce rainfall, watering trees in both private gardens and public spaces has become crucial for the city of Offenbach. While specific management details for the city during extended heat and drought periods are not readily available, general practices in German cities and drought management strategies suggest that Offenbach likely employs targeted watering measures to protect young trees and vulnerable green spaces.
These measures often prioritize irrigation for young trees, given their shallower roots and increased susceptibility to water stress. Efficient watering techniques, such as drip irrigation or soil moisture sensors, are used to minimize water consumption. In critical periods, municipal water or stored groundwater reserves may be utilized. Remote sensing data, like Sentinel-2 satellite imagery, is monitored to identify stressed areas in need of watering. Drought-resistant planting schemes, mulching, and groundwater recharge support measures are also implemented where possible.
In Offenbach, the Department of Green Spaces within the City Service is focusing its efforts on watering to support the city's greenery. Two water trucks, each with a capacity of around 3,500 liters, are being used daily to bring approximately 30,000 liters of water to the beds and newly planted trees each day. The focus is on young trees planted in the past five years, as their roots are not yet deep enough to draw water from deeper soil layers.
However, the city's greenery is under significant stress due to the persistent heat and lack of rain. To aid in the recovery, residents are encouraged to help by watering the trees in front of their houses with a few cans of water. It is suggested that watering in home gardens should preferably be done in the early morning hours to maximize absorption and minimize potential negative effects on the watering process, such as evaporation in the sun or encouraging pests like snails in the evening.
It is essential to note that perennials on median strips, while heat-resistant, require additional care during prolonged heat periods. Watering rose bushes should be done carefully to prevent fungus, with leaves kept as dry as possible. Additionally, watering private gardens should be done in the early morning hours to best support the growth of young trees and other plants.
While Offenbach cannot supply all of the more than 20,000 trees in the city area, every bit of water helps in ensuring the city's greenery remains vibrant and healthy during these challenging weather conditions.
