"Complimentary Vegetable Seeds Offered in 2024 - February Announcement"

In recent weeks, the greenhouse has been meticulously cleaned, and preparations have been made for seed sowing. The newsletter, filled with growing advice, even offers 12 packs of free seeds to help you get started.

Whether you're growing basil indoors or outdoors, following these essential steps will ensure a successful harvest.

Growing Basil Indoors

To grow basil indoors, find a spot with at least 6 hours of bright, direct sunlight, such as a south-facing window. In low light conditions, supplement with a grow light to ensure enough light. Use well-drained potting soil and sow basil seeds about 1/8-inch deep or plant a rooted cutting. Keep the soil moist but not soggy.

For cuttings, cover loosely with plastic wrap to retain humidity, but remove daily to allow air circulation and prevent mold. Water when the top inch of soil feels dry, and avoid overwatering to prevent root rot. Maintain a warm environment, ideally between 65-75°F (18-24°C).

Growing Basil Outdoors

Start seeds indoors about 6 to 8 weeks before the last frost date, then transplant outdoors when the danger of frost has passed. Plant basil where it will receive full sun (6+ hours daily). Thin seedlings or transplant young plants about 10 inches apart to allow airflow and healthy growth.

Use well-draining, nutrient-rich soil. You can add amendments like BT granules to control pests like gnats during seedling growth. Consider succession planting, sowing seeds every 6 weeks during the growing season for a continuous supply of fresh basil. Regularly pinch or prune stems just above a node to encourage bushier growth and prevent flowering, extending harvest time.

Additional Tips

Basil grows fast; seedlings sprout in 5-10 days and are harvest-ready in 3-4 weeks. Grow multiple basil varieties together, but be aware of cross-pollination if saving seeds and size differences between varieties. Use cuttings by rooting them in water or moist soil for an easy way to propagate new plants.

Basil is an ideal herb for beginners due to its versatility in the kitchen and sustainability benefits. With ample light, warmth, moisture, and space, both indoor and outdoor basil plants can thrive.
