City ofTomsk Prepared to Hear Volunteers' Ideas Regarding Greening ofFruzinArea
Tomsk, May 22 - RIA Tomsk: The city administration in Tomsk is open to considering proposals from landscape volunteers to enhance the greening of Prospekt Frunze, as well as potential solutions to prevent future tree damage, revealing these insights on Thursday to RIA Tomsk, according to deputy mayor for urban development Nikolai Glebovich.
Previous reports indicated that contractors working on Prospekt Frunze caused tree damage in April and May, with several trees succumbing as a result. The administration has mandated the contractor to undertake compensatory measures, with road workers now required to plant three times as many trees, each at least 1.5 to 2 meters in height, following the completion of repairs.
"We are open to listening to any proposals from landscape volunteers; we listen to them every Thursday. If they come up with anything concrete in the form of written proposals, that would be great," said Glebovich.
Preliminary estimates suggest that the contractor damaged around 16 birches and elms. Three birches had to be uprooted, and nine trees will be planted as replacements, with suitalbe species, including birches, hornbeams, and apple trees, being considered for replanting. The contractor will also incur a fine.
"It's truly regrettable, and I genuinely regret this situation. In essence, this experienced contractor has been working on our sidewalks for quite some time," remarked Glebovich.
Compensatory measures in such situations typically involve replanting more trees than those lost, with mature saplings usually preferred to ensure immediate visual and environmental benefits. A diverse mix of native and hardy species also helps build resilience against pests and diseases. Additionally, soil restoration, mulching, and irrigation systems can support newly planted trees during dry periods.
Encouraging public participation in decisions regarding replanting, as well as educational initiatives, can foster community engagement and appreciation for urban trees. These strategies may help prevent similar incidents in the future, encouraging better protection and maintenance of trees in urban settings.
"Volunteers with expertise in environmental science, particularly in the field of landscape and gardening, could propose innovative ways to enhance the greening of Prospekt Frunze, considering home-and-garden solutions for a more resilient and vibrant landscape."
"To foster a sustainable lifestyle that promotes the well-being of urban trees, the administration could implement educational initiatives about the importance of trees in our city's ecosystem, emphasizing the role of citizens in protecting and nurturing them, much like we do in our homes and gardens."
