City Offers Free Wood Chip Pick-Up & Encourages Hedgehog Homes
The city has announced a free wood chip pick-up service for garden owners from October 6 to October 24. Meanwhile, residents are encouraged to create winter homes for hedgehogs using twigs and leaves. Here's how to make the most of these services and dispose of garden waste responsibly.
The city's free wood chip pick-up service allows each residential unit to dispose of up to five cubic meters of wood material at no cost. To use this service, garden owners should first check their pick-up date in the waste calendar, environmental handbook, or the city's waste app. Certain streets and locations may require prior inspection or notification, especially those marked with 'X' in the environmental handbook or with specific access restrictions.
When preparing for pick-up, residents should ensure that wood chips are placed on their property, clearly visible from the street, and accessible from above. Branches and twigs should be stacked in one direction and in a pile to facilitate collection. If wood chips cannot be placed on the owner's property, sidewalks should remain clear, and the material should be provided the evening before pick-up.
Small hedge clippings or garden waste that cannot be picked up with a grabber will not be taken. Additionally, material under one cubic meter should be disposed of in green waste containers.
In case of any queries regarding waste disposal or the pick-up service, residents can contact their local environmental department. In Germany, for instance, this is often the local Umweltamt or Abfallwirtschaftsbetrieb. Contact information can usually be found on the official city or government website.
To support local wildlife, it is recommended to leave a pile of twigs and leaves as a winter home for hedgehogs in the garden. This simple act can help these creatures survive the cold winter months.
The city's free wood chip pick-up service and responsible garden waste disposal can help keep our environment clean and safe. By following the guidelines and supporting local wildlife, we can all contribute to a greener, more sustainable community.
