Fastned Submits Planning Application for UK's First Drive-Thru EV Charging Hub in Aberdeen

Fastned, a Dutch company specialising in ultra-rapid electric vehicle (EV) charging, has submitted a planning application to Aberdeen City Council for the construction of the UK's first drive-thru EV charging hub. Located in the heart of Aberdeen, this innovative project is set to revolutionise the EV charging landscape in Scotland.

The charging hub will be installed within the existing Grampian House warehouse, marking a unique conversion that has never been attempted in the UK before. Fastned is eager to collaborate with the Aberdeen City Council to make this hub a reality, contributing to Aberdeen's position at the forefront of Scotland's energy transition.

Each charging bay at the hub will offer 400kW chargers, capable of charging an EV in as little as 15 minutes. The drive-thru format, similar to petrol stations, ensures accessibility for all vehicle types, including those towing trailers.

In addition to the charging facilities, the hub will also feature a shop, toilets, and seating area, providing a comfortable and convenient charging experience for EV drivers. The central location off Virginia Street on Aberdeen's inner city ring road will make it easily accessible for residents, businesses, and drivers journeying in and out of the city.

Tom Hurst, UK Country Director at Fastned, expressed his excitement about the project, stating that the hub is well-suited for Aberdeen's EV drivers. The charging hub aligns with Aberdeen's wider decarbonisation strategy, further committing to a cleaner, greener city.

Fastned also plans to install solar panels on the existing roof of the warehouse to generate clean energy for the site, further reducing the environmental impact of the development. The charging hub aims to show what's possible in an urban environment while advancing the adoption of electric vehicles.

As of July 2025, the project is still in the planning approval stage. Once approved, construction will commence, marking an important step in Fastned's mission to accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles in the UK.
