"Café opens in historic Mainz district"

In the heart of Mainz's historic old town, a new local spot has emerged, named "Freude." Translating to 'joy' in German, the café is quickly becoming a popular destination for residents and tourists alike. Located near the vibrant Rhine River area, "Freude" offers regional snacks, cakes, and iced coffee, as seen in a TikTok video.

The brainchild of Franziska Klimas, the owner of "Freude," the café is housed in a 17th-century building that was previously home to the inn "Willems." Klimas, who has called Mainz her home since 2007, has been dreaming of her own establishment for a long time.

The outdoor area in Kapuzinerstraße will boast 24 seats at ten tables, while the interior has been transformed from a restaurant into a cozy café. Klimas refers to the outdoor area in front of St. Ignaz Church as the 'Piazza of Joy.'

"Freude" is open from 10 am to 10 pm and from Thursday to Sunday. On Saturdays and Sundays, the café opens at 9:30 am. The menu includes classic breakfast dishes, cakes, salads, lunch plate dishes, soups, and quiche.

During the day, "Freude" serves smaller meals and suitable drinks from morning to evening. In the evening, the café transitions into a bar, with the focus for drinks on Aperol, Spritz varieties, Gin Tonic, local beer, and wine. Three out of the four wineries providing wine for "Freude" are directly from the region.

Klimas is still looking for staff in service and the kitchen to fill the opening hours at "Freude." With 55 seats on the ground floor and in the old wine cellar, there's plenty of space for customers to enjoy their meals and drinks.

Franziska Klimas was chosen by the owner of the historic house at Kapuzinerstraße 29 as the successor to the inn "Willems" at the beginning of this year. The new gastronomy named "Freude" will open opposite the St. Ignaz Church in the Mainz old town on August 15.

While exact opening hours are not specified in the search results, cafés in Mainz old town typically open in the morning and stay open into the early evening. For precise hours, it would be best to check directly with the café or on their social media or official website if available.

After her studies, Klimas worked in marketing and events. However, her passion for gastronomy was evident, as she gained experience in the field during her studies. With "Freude," Klimas aims to provide a place for enjoyment, local food, and quality drinks, embodying the spirit of the café's name.

In the transformed interior of "Freude," guests can savor a lifestyle that blends home-and-garden aesthetics with a food-and-drink menu that showcases local dishes and regional wines. As evening approaches, the café morphs into a bar, offering an array of drinks like Aperol, wine, and beer that cater to the food-and-drink scene in Mainz's historic old town.
