Bremerhaven's Shipyard Quarter: A New Waterfront City District for 6,000 Residents
Bremerhaven has initiated a substantial urban development project, the Shipyard Quarter, with an informational event attended by Mayor Melf Grantz, city planning head Carolin Oltmanns, investor Dieter Petram, and Nils Schnorrenberger from BIS. The project, seven years in the making, aims to create a unique, waterfront city district for up to 6,000 residents.
The Shipyard Quarter, planned to be a 'real island' with a new canal on the Külken peninsula, will offer a mix of housing types, including row houses, owner-occupied apartments, and publicly subsidized section 8 housing. Residents can expect a high quality of life, living near the water and in a largely car-free environment.
Construction has already begun, with the first apartments along Riedemannstraße starting in August. The entire project, including the Mobility Hub for car traffic in the south, is expected to be completed by 2040, with a total public sector investment of 140 million euros. Building plan 501 for the Külken peninsula, including subsidized housing, is set to take legal effect next year.
The Shipyard Quarter, a significant addition to Bremerhaven's urban landscape, is expected to provide housing and a high quality of life for thousands of residents. With construction underway and plans approved, this ambitious project is set to transform the Külken peninsula into a vibrant, waterfront community.
