Join the Nationwide "Garden Bird Watch" - Be Part of the Bird Population Count!

Moment of Avian Yard Chatter - "Bird Census in the Garden Hour"

Ever wondered about the number of sparrows, blue tits, finches, or robins in your neighborhood? The Nature Conservation Union Germany (NABU) and the Bavarian Nature Conservation Association LBV want to find out and they need your help! From May 9-11, they're hosting the nationwide event called "Garden Bird Watch."

Participating is an easy and fun way to contribute to vital research. The main objective is to track common and easily spotted bird species in your garden, on your balcony, or in the park. You might even catch a glimpse of the "Bird of the Year" 2025, the redstart, as it forages for insects in gardens, according to LBV biologist Angelika Nelson.

To take part, simply watch the birds around you for an hour during the given dates. Record the highest number of each species seen at once, then submit your findings via the internet, app, or post. This data will help provide valuable insights into the current state of the bird world, supplementing official population trends.

To ensure a successful bird watch, here are some helpful tips:

  1. Visit the official websites of NABU and LBV for information on the event, including the registration process, if required.
  2. Observe the birds silently for an hour, using a checklist or app to identify species. Record any interesting bird behaviors or notable sightings.
  3. After the event, submit your observations to the designated platform or website.
  4. Utilize bird identification guides or apps to ensure accurate species identification, and consider using binoculars or a spotting scope for a closer view.
  5. Share your experience on social media with relevant hashtags, inspire others to participate in future events.

Your participation in the "Garden Bird Watch" will play a crucial role in conserving our feathered friends and supporting important research projects. Happy watching!
