Spot and Count Birds in Berlin: From Peregrine Falcons to Sparrows - Join the Community Effort This May!

Invitation Extended by Sparrow to Berlin Residents: Participate in Annual City Bird Census - Berlin's residents urged a bird census

Get ready to put on your bird-watching hats, Berliners! The Nature Conservation Union (NABU) and Bavarian Nature Conservation Association (LBV) are hosting the "Hour of Garden Birds" from May 9 to 11, and they're inviting you to participate!

Keen observers can spot various bird species throughout Berlin, with highlights like Peregrine falcons soaring over the city and the vibrant orange-blue kingfisher residing in the capital. But, which bird species call Berlin home and how many can be found within the city? The NABU is eager to find out, and they need your help!

If you're interested in joining the bird count, NABU Berlin suggests keeping an eye out for the goldfinch in the city center. These small birds, with their red faces and yellow wing stripes, are also known as common chaffinches. The redstart, with its distinctive red tail seen bobbing while singing, is more common in the outskirts, but common species like sparrows and pigeons should also be noted.

Last year, a whopping 36,000 birds were counted in the city!

Want to know how to get involved? It's simple! Interested participants should observe birds from a quiet spot in the garden, park, or even from a window, and jot down the highest number of each species seen within an hour. Results can be submitted through the internet, app, or post. The nature conservation associations hope these submissions will provide valuable insights into current developments in the bird world, supplementing official population trends. Over 1,980 people participated in last year's event, helping to count the 36,000 birds.

Berlin's NABU groups are also organizing excursions during the counting weekend. The Lichtenberg district group will be venturing into the Wartenberger field on May 11 at 9:00 AM, while families with children can join an event in the Rummelsburger Bucht on May 10 at 2:00 PM.

So, are you ready to help conserve Berlin's fascinating avian community? Join the "Hour of Garden Birds" and share your findings with NABU and LBV!

During the "Hour of Garden Birds" event in Berlin from May 9 to 11, participate by observing diverse bird species such as common chaffinches (goldfinches) in the city center or redstarts in the outskirts. For a chance to contribute to the conservation of Berlin's avian community, conduct a one-hour bird count from a quiet spot in your garden, park, or window, and submit your results via the internet, app, or post.

While joining the bird count, you might even uncover information on the number of different bird species calling Berlin home, just like the 36,000 birds counted last year. To further immerse yourself in the avian world, consider attending an excursion in Berlin's Lichtenberg district or Rummelsburger Bucht, organized by the local Nature Conservation Union groups.
