Restaurants in a French resort now ban streetwear associated with swimming attire - Beachfront resort in France prohibits streetwear of bathing attire
The French seaside town of Les Sables-d'Olonne has taken a step towards maintaining public decency and respect by implementing a new rule that forbids beachgoers from walking around the town in swimwear or with bare chests.
Mayor Yannick Moreau voiced his concern over the increasing instances of inappropriate behavior by tourists, stating that people are walking around in swimwear, which he considers to be inappropriate. He has asked for a little decency in Les Sables-d'Olonne.
The new rule applies to all beachgoers and is intended to encourage more modest attire in public areas. A fine may be imposed on individuals who are found violating this rule.
The ban is part of a local by-law effective immediately, with fines of up to €150 ($175) for violations. It aims to ensure that tourists respect the town's social norms and hygiene standards, as residents do not want people wandering around "half-naked" in everyday public spaces.
Les Sables-d'Olonne stresses that swimwear is allowed on the seven-mile stretch of beach but not in other public town areas. The campaign for adherence includes flyers, public notices, and police enforcement. The slogan for the regulation is "In Les Sables d'Olonne, respect doesn't go on holiday," highlighting the town's desire to balance tourism with local customs and maintain a respectful atmosphere throughout the year.
The ban was introduced primarily to manage visitor conduct, uphold public decency and hygiene, and respect the wishes of the local community in response to surging tourism. The town hopes that this measure will contribute to a more enjoyable and respectful environment for all visitors and residents alike.
