Jenny Mitchell's Adventurous Journey Towards Her Duke of Edinburgh Hillary Award

Jenny Mitchell, the media advisor for the Duke of Edinburgh Hillary Award, is currently working towards her Bronze medal. This isn't just a professional endeavour for Jenny; it's a personal challenge she's undertaken as a participant in the programme.

In 2018, Jenny embarked on her first overnight hike to earn a Bronze Medal in the award. The tramp took place with a group of 12, including several Bronze and Silver Award Alumni, and they set off from Te Puia Hut. Their destination was the Mangatainoko Hot Springs, a scenic and challenging route that tested the mettle of even the most seasoned trampers.

Good communication within the group was essential to avoid duplicating or missing important items. The experienced trampers in the group provided packing tips, with a focus on the importance of snacks. Jenny found the Plan My Walk's alerts and updates feature particularly helpful, giving her peace of mind during the tramp.

Jenny also recommends using the Gear list on Plan My Walk for gear specific to each walk. She discovered affordable outdoors gear on TradeMe and Facebook marketplace for her first tramp, ensuring she was well-equipped for the journey. The experienced trampers also emphasised the importance of good socks for comfort and happiness during the tramp.

Jenny found the Plan My Walk app invaluable in helping her plan her first overnight tramp. She particularly appreciated the app's Gear function, which helped ensure she had the right clothing for the tramp. However, there was one thing she regretted not bringing - an inflatable mattress for a more comfortable sleep during the tramp.

The Duke of Edinburgh Hillary Award is an organisation encouraging participation for individuals aged 14-24 years old. Jenny's experience highlights the benefits of the programme, not just in terms of physical challenges, but also in teamwork and communication skills. Walking together as a team was a positive experience for Jenny, making the challenging tramp all the more rewarding.

In conclusion, Jenny's journey towards her Bronze medal is a testament to the benefits of the Duke of Edinburgh Hillary Award. She recommends the programme and Plan My Walk's app features for trampers of all experience levels. For new trampers, Te Puia Hut is a suitable starting point, and the Mangatainoko Hot Springs is a challenging but rewarding destination.
