Autumn escape to Kaltenberg Castle in Bavaria aims to charm visitors with its unique attraction
The Kingdom of Pumpkins at Castle Kaltenberg near Geltendorf is set to open this Saturday, transforming the historic castle into a family-friendly autumn destination. The pumpkin display will run until November 2nd, offering a variety of activities for visitors of all ages.
This year, no information about the collaborating organization or the event's theme has been announced. However, what we do know is that the event promises to be a spectacle, with international show carvers demonstrating their techniques on weekends.
One of the highlights of the event is the cooking of the largest pumpkin soup in Bavaria. The soup will be prepared in a 555-liter pot at Castle Kaltenberg, with 50 cents from each portion going to a good cause.
In 2024, a total of 21,310 tonnes of edible pumpkins were harvested, matching the 2020 peak. These pumpkins will be on display at Castle Kaltenberg during the weekend of September 27-28, with the largest pumpkins remaining on show during the first weekend of October (3-5 October), when canoes made from pumpkins will also be featured.
The pumpkin display at Castle Kaltenberg will be open on Saturdays, Sundays in September, and Fridays in October. Visitors can try their hand at carving pumpkins to avoid unintentionally scary homemade pumpkins.
In 2020, 1248 hectares were used for growing pumpkins, but this decreased by 14.4% to 1068 hectares in 2024. The varieties grown in Bavaria include Hokkaido, butternut, and giant pumpkins, with 351 farms growing pumpkins outdoors, 114 of which are located in Upper Bavaria.
When buying pumpkins, it's important to check for damage or soft spots. Cut pumpkins can be stored in a freshness box with the cut surface down in the refrigerator for a few days, or the flesh can be briefly blanched and then frozen. Pumpkins can last until spring when stored cool and dry, without frost.
Tickets for Pumpkin Worlds at Castle Kaltenberg start at ten euros (children from five euros). As Castle Kaltenberg transforms into a family-friendly autumn destination, it's an event not to be missed.
