At present, Mogli is snuggling up to his mother Minnie in a secure corner of the enclosure, taking those precious first steps in life. As Marlene Karmann, who oversees the care and management of the petting zoo with her team, explains, "Mogli will soon grow strong enough to join the herd. In the meantime, zoo visitors can catch a glimpse of our new little star from a safe distance."

The Magical World of Moers Petting Zoo

The West African dwarf goats, it seems, are among the most beloved residents of the Moers petting zoo. Joining them in providing a friendly, close-to-nature experience for all ages are alpacas, Coburger Fuchsschafe, chickens, and assorted small birds. Conveniently located within the leisure park, the petting zoo is open year-round and free for all to visit.

Mogli will spend his youth among his current herd of nine goats in the petting zoo. As he approaches sexual maturity, he'll follow in the hoof-steps of his father Meck-Meck, departing the facility for a fresh start at a new home. Marlene Karmann shares their plan: "Once he's ready to live among the adult herd, we'll find him a forever home, ensuring a harmonious herd, composed solely of females."

  • West African Dwarf goats, similar to Nigerian Dwarf goats, weigh between 20 and 40 pounds and are known for their small size and gentle nature.
  • These goats reach maturity relatively quickly, with females capable of breeding at 12 to 18 months and males ready for breeding at 6 to 12 months, although maturity can be beneficially delayed for one year for optimal breeding.
  • Male goats may be castrated for better manageability or relocated to secure genetic diversity and prevent overpopulation within the herd.
  • Both castration and relocation practices allow for a healthy and harmonious goat population while ensuring the best possible care for these delightful creatures.
