Abundant wildlife flourishes in Carlton Marshes

Nestled within the heart of the Broads National Park, Carlton Marshes is a veritable paradise for bird enthusiasts. The reserve, which spans a restored 384 acres of land, is teeming with an array of avian species, thanks to the support of donors and a £4 million grant from the National Lottery Heritage Fund [1].

One of the most remarkable sights at Carlton Marshes is the resurgence of the marsh harrier, a bird of prey that has made an incredible comeback. These majestic creatures are regular visitors to the wetlands, with excellent chances of observing them in flight over the marsh [3]. Another iconic migratory bird, the swift, is also a breeding resident at the reserve, as part of a concerted conservation effort to boost Suffolk’s swift population [5].

Visitors to Carlton Marshes can explore the various habitats, including reed beds and marshes, which provide excellent vantage points for birdwatching. The reserve's visitor centre offers information and access to trails where marsh harriers and swifts can be seen. Watching from designated hides and along boardwalks further increases the chances of spotting breeding birds, especially marsh harriers soaring overhead [1][3][5].

Recent additions to the avian population at Carlton Marshes include the common tern, which can now be seen hunting along the river and deeper dykes throughout the marsh. Newly-surfaced footpaths have been created to lead visitors from the centre to the new hides across the marsh [2].

A pair of avocets has successfully reared chicks to near fledging at a new hide on Peto's Marsh near the river Waveney ferry crossing. Other new breeding species on Peto's Marsh include shelduck, little ringed plover, and common tern [4].

The reserve has also attracted some unusual birdlife, such as spoonbills, glossy ibis, and white-winged black terns. Local people, many of whom have discovered Carlton Marshes for the first time during lockdown, are enjoying walks there with family and friends [6].

Construction on the centre at Carlton Marshes has resumed after lockdown and is progressing. A highlight of the new facilities will be the new tower hide, offering spectacular views of barn owls, which have recently hatched chicks at the marsh [7]. The new lookout hide at the marsh is designed with children in mind for viewing house martins [8].

In summary, Carlton Marshes is an excellent destination for birdwatchers, offering a diverse range of avian species and well-established visitor facilities. Whether you're a seasoned birdwatcher or a family looking for a fun day out, Carlton Marshes promises an unforgettable experience.
