When's the Breminale happening? Where's it happening? Is it free? What's different at the Breminale in 2024? What's stayin' the same in Breminale 2024?

What's on the Breminale schedule? What else is there to explore at the Breminale? What's the schedule for little ones? Why does Breminale need to trim the fat?

Bremen's ultimate open-air fest has returned! Live music, spinners, workshops, oh my! All by the good ol' Weser. This year, things are shakin' up a bit.

When's the Breminale?

It kicked off on July 3rd and wraps up on July 7th, Sunday night.

Where's it at?

The Osterdeich's field is the Breminale's home once more. Plus, we've got programming in the park behind the Kunsthalle and the adjoining Altmannshohe. The Flut stage is mostly movin' to the Licht-Luft-Bad on Stadtwerder.

Is it free?

kinda. The action at Osterdeich and the park stays gratis. But there's a five-dollar cover charge for Licht-Luft-Bad, which includes a ferry ride with Cafe Sand.

What's changed at the Breminale in 2024?

  • The biggest deal: The Flut tent bit the dust. The Flut stage's performances are movin' mostly to the Licht-Luft-Bad on Stadtwerder. There, the Lagerhaus crew organizes concerts, kids' theatre, dance, installations, and a sauna from Friday to Sunday. However, everyone aged 14 and up will need a five-buck ticket, which includes the ferry ride.
  • The Flut team will be groovin' on Sunday in the Schleuse's tent. The Schleuse will feature mainly up-and-comers on stage.
  • The Altmannshohe is gettin' a brand-new open-air disco. Hosts are Studio Illegale, Lift, and "our collective". Last year, they were on the market square.
  • The wooden play project for kiddos is movin' to the exit of the Kunsttunnel, makin' it closer to the rest of the Kinder-Breminale's action in the park. In the park, the water slide is gettin' swapped for a Bobby Car course.
  • The event ship "Dauerwelle" from the Hochschule für Künste (HfK) will dock at Anleger 1. There, HfK students will flaunt their skills.

What remains the same at Breminale 2024?

  • Radio Bremen stage still reigns supreme. The lineup is on the various Bremer radio stations: Bremen Four on Saturday, COSMO closin' it on Sunday. Bremen Two started on Wednesday, Bremen One and Bremen Next took the torch on Thursday and Friday.
  • The Cultural Kraken and the Papp have teamed up again for Breminale. "Pappinale Krakinale" is where the fun's at. Location: Osterdeich.
  • The Planks have a fresh collective. They'll still build their stage at the start of the dyke – but this year, the program is entirely from the collective, not the fest.
  • The Third gets more square footage in the second Breminale season. DJ sets, live music, clothing swaps, and table football are added to the mix now.
  • Muchos Más caps off the festival grounds, headin' towards the Weser Stadium.
  • The Lock is the last big tent on the Breminale so far. The opening was taken over by the Pop Office Bremen together with the Showcase Locked In. "Unknown concerts" were in charge on Thursdays – the rest of the days are taken over by the Breminale team itself.

What's on the Breminale schedule?

Breminale's all about the music – live music, that is. No big names here, but the spectrum is wide, from hip-hop, punk, metal, folk, rock to pop. Plus, there's dance, theatre, workshops, and more.

On Thursday, rock singer Andreas Kummert took the stage on the "Radio Bremen stage". He became famous through "The Voice of Germany", which he won in 2013.

On Saturday, Raum27 will have a home game. The Bremenhaven duo is just back from a sold-out headliner tour and will also perform on the "Radio Bremen stage".

The entire schedule's been posted by the organizers on their website.

What else is there to explore at Breminale?

Breminale dishes out more than just tuneage:

  • Flea Market: On Sunday, a "Supermarket" expects customers on Osterdeich Street, a mix of alternative flea market and neighborhood forum – that's organizer Jonte von Döllen's description of the concept. It comes from Jule Osten, who regularly organizes the "Supermarket" at the Goods Station.
  • Bike-inale: On Sunday, the "Bike-inale" will take place again on the closed Osterdeich – a meet-up spot for Bremen's two-wheeler fans. Between Altenwall and the car park, visitors can try a cargo bike course, examine new cargo bike models, or purchase spare parts.
  • Marketplace: This is about sustainable consumption. A second-hand shop offers a selection of clothes, with local manufacturers and start-ups boostin' the range.

What's the schedule for the kiddos?

The kiddie program moves to the park behind the art gallery again this year. Only the wooden project hangs out on Osterdeich, but it's kinda close to the exit of the art tunnel this time. Details about the program will be up on the Breminale website soon.

Why does Breminale need to cut costs?

The festival's smaller this year because some public funding got the ax. Previously, there was a 200,000 euro grant from Neustart Kultur fund, but they didn't qualify this time. Instead, there are 50,000 euros from another federal fund, which is a loss of 150,000 euros in federal funding compared to last year.

How do I get to Breminale?

Osterdeich's just a few meters from Domsheide station's heart. The organizer asks passin' on the car but coming by bike instead. The ADFC, as a partnership with Breminale, offers bicycle parking spaces on the Deichkrone. There are only a few spots to park cars in the quarter. Those still wantin' to come by car should park outside. Additionally, the Sielwall ferry runs until 1 a.m. during the Breminale and until 11 p.m. on the last festival day.

Are there any traffic restrictions?

Osterdeich's closed for car traffic daily from 7 p.m. from Altenwall/Tiefe to Sielwall, with a detour. Cyclists, of course, can use the closed road but should dismount due to pedestrian traffic. The bike paths on the dyke and along the Weser close to the festival site during the event.

Can I bring my pup?

No restrictions on puppies at Breminale, but the organizer suggests leavin' 'em at home if possible. They don't want to piss off pet owners, but the fest ain't pet-friendly, says von Döllen. Plus, it's loud and crowded, which isn't good for the animals.

When's high tide?

According to the tide table, the next high tide's on Saturday at 4:41 p.m. and Sunday at 5:30 p.m.

What's there to eat and drink?

Bringin' snacks and drinks is allowed. They want Breminale to be accessible to people of all financial situations. But, Breminale also needs to make its coin, for example, through beverage sales. Stations are also available where you can refill your water for free.

Where are the restrooms?

The organizer specifically requests that the provided loos, not residents' yards, are used. Toilet containers are available at the top of the dyke, and there are wheelchair-accessible restrooms both at the top and bottom of the dyke.

How safe and accessible is Breminale?

To make Breminale as accessible as possible, the organizers are teamin' up with Martinsclub Bremen. Breminale also partners with L'Unita Awareness. These so-called Awareness Teams serve as contact points not only for cases of sexual harassment but also as caregivers, for instance, in situations of excessive alcohol consumption. They can be recognized by their lilac vests and radios. Plus, there's an Awareness tent and a relaxin' zone above the dyke.

How should I behave at Breminale?

The Breminale team places a strong emphasis on sustainability. The caterin' is fully switched to reusable items. Visitors are asked to dispose of their trash. Glass bottles can be placed at deposit stations. Visitors can get free pocket ashtrays at drink wagons and bars. Cigarette butts and bottle caps should ideally be tossed in the trash to avoid littering the dyke and endin' up in the water.

Regards noise, please consider the neighbors if you continue movin' from the Osterdeich after sunset. Lastly, the Breminale team stresses that the fest doesn't tolerate sexism, racism, homophobia, or any other form of discrimination.

  • Don't miss the opportunity to explore other aspects of the Breminale festival beyond music, as home-and-garden enthusiasts might enjoy the "Supermarket" on Sunday, a unique mix of alternative flea market and neighborhood forum.
  • In addition to the music-centric schedules, there's the "Bike-inale" event on Sunday, which invites bicycle fans to attend a meet-up and try a cargo bike course, examine new models, or purchase spare parts on the closed Osterdeich.
